103-105 HEATON PARK ROAD NE6 5NR | MON – SAT 8:30AM – 6PM | SUN 11AM – 4PM
I approached Heaton Perk with a sense that it might turn out to be a bit of a gimmick, and unfortunately it was. Although I avoid writing on places I wouldn’t recommend (if something wasn’t good, it just won’t feature), I decided to include Heaton Perk because the gimmicky nature of its mimicry of Friends’ Central Perk is sort of an attraction in itself, if you’re into that sort of thing. Also, I can’t fault their cakes – I had a really delicious banana bread.
Sadly though, our meals weren’t to the same standard. We might have caught them on an off day, but our milkshakes were room temperature and actively quite un-tasty, and the food came in very stingy portions and was quite bland (though it looks nice enough in photos, so credit for presentation).
It is a shame the rest of their fare isn’t to the same standard as their sweet treats. But go, get a slice of cake and take a silly photo – it was fun enough. It isn’t solely as shallow as all that though — the inside of Heaton Perk is well decorated with energetic colours and a cosy vibe. It would make a lovely place to sit with a cup of tea or coffee and do an afternoon’s work. Particularly noted are their retro collection of sweets which they have at the counter – giant love hearts, yes please.
